Guidance Officer

​The Guidance Officer at Mitchelton Special School is member of the school team, working collaboratively to support students and their families. The Guidance Officer’s responsibilities can include:

  • Assessment and Support: Conducting assessment to identify the nature of learning difficulties, disabilities, developmental levels, and psychological or emotional needs, informing recommendations for educational adjustments and interventions including verification of disability.|

  • Information and Guidance: Providing information, recommendations, and advice to students, teachers, and parents on matters concerning education, behaviour, disability, transitions, mental health, and family issues, facilitating informed decision-making and support.

  • Policy Implementation: Assisting in the application of student protection policies and risk management processes to ensure a safe and supportive school environment.

  • Counselling and Referrals: Providing counselling services and facilitating referrals to address issues related to relationships, grief and loss, safety, and crisis management, supporting the emotional well-being of students and their families.

  • Program Development: Supporting the school community to develop and implement plans, programs, and procedures aimed at fostering resilience and promoting positive educational, developmental, and lifelong learning outcomes for students.

  • Community Support: Assisting the school community in responding effectively to identified personal, social, emotional, and educational needs.

  • Collaboration with Agencies: Working in partnership with school staff, departmental personnel, local government, and community agencies to address and support the diverse needs of students and their families.
