Pathways

The Pathways program supports students in Years 11 and 12 by providing a structured and individualised approach to preparing for life beyond school. This program recognises the diverse strengths, interests, and aspirations of each student and is designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed for a successful transition into adulthood. This may include supported or open employment, volunteering, participation in community activities, or increased independence in daily living.

SET (Senior Education Training) Plan

Preparation begins in Year 10, where teachers collaborate closely with students and their parents or carers to identify post-school goals through the Senior Education and Training (SET) plan process. This planning phase ensures that students’ learning programs are tailored to their needs, preferences, and long-term aspirations. It also provides an opportunity to explore options such as vocational education and training (VET), work experience, life skills development, and relevant support services.

PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) Plan

Following the SET planning, a PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) plan is developed. This is a person-centred planning process that places the student at the heart of decision-making. Through visual mapping and collaborative conversations, the PATH process helps students articulate their dreams, identify achievable goals, and outline the steps and supports required to reach them. Involving families, school staff, and other key stakeholders, the PATH plan fosters a shared vision for the student’s future and ensures consistency and alignment across all areas of support and learning.

Together, the SET and PATH processes provide a comprehensive foundation for students to confidently navigate their post-school journey with purpose, direction, and support.

Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)

All senior secondary students have the opportunity to work towards the Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA). In Term 1 of Year 11, a QCIA curriculum plan is developed for each student using the Guideline for Individual Learning (GIL).
The QCIA curriculum plan records individual learning goals under five curriculum organisers:
•    Communication and technologies (CT)
•    Community, citizenship and the environment (CCE)
•    Personal and living dimensions (PLD)
•    Leisure and recreation (LR)
•    Vocational and transition activities (VTA)

At the end of Year 12, each student’s achievements are summarised and recorded on the QCIA under each of the curriculum organisers. This can be presented to future employers, training providers or service providers.

Off campus skills development/Work Experience

Students in Years 11 and 12 have the opportunity to engage in off-campus skill development as part of their senior schooling. Mitchelton Special School has developed strong partnerships with a range of local businesses and community organisations that are supportive of hosting our students.
We recognise that every student’s pathway is unique. While some students may participate in structured work experience placements, others may explore alternative opportunities for community-based learning and skill development that align with their abilities and individual goals.
All placements require a formal Work Experience Agreement Form and the relevant consent documentation to be completed prior to commencement.
