Primary - Juniors – Prep to Year 2
The Junior sector at Mitchelton Special School supports students from Prep to Year 2. Guided by our motto, “Starting Strong”, we focus on laying the foundation for lifelong learning through tailored, engaging, and meaningful educational experiences.
Each student in the Junior sector follows an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP), designed to meet their unique learning needs. These plans outline how students access the Australian Curriculum across key learning areas, ensuring personalised support and meaningful progress.
Our teaching is grounded in practical, hands-on pedagogies that bring learning to life. Students engage with the following seven Australian Curriculum learning areas:
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
• The Arts
• Health and Physical Education
• Languages
A strong emphasis is placed on developing communication skills within the General Capabilities framework. Students progress from informal to more conventional communication methods, with learning tailored to their individual academic and communication goals, which are developed in consultation with the school’s Speech and Language Pathologist.
In addition to academic learning, students are introduced to the wider school community through participation in events that celebrate culture, connection, and learning—helping them build a sense of belonging from their earliest years.
