Our Focus on Reading

At Mitchelton Special School, we are committed to helping every student achieve their full potential in reading. Beginning in 2025, reading will become a key priority within our teaching and learning framework. Our core strategies include:
•    Daily, Explicit Instruction: Reading will be explicitly taught in every classroom, every day.
•    Individualised Support: All students will participate in regular screening and progress monitoring, enabling teachers to tailor instruction to meet each student’s unique learning needs.
•    Consistent Curriculum: All teaching staff will implement a universal scope and sequence using the Literacy Hub’s Systematic Sequential Phonics program.
•    Ongoing Professional Development: Teachers, teacher aides, and school leaders will engage in professional learning focused on evidence-based reading instruction, aligned with Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum.
We are excited to strengthen our commitment to literacy and ensure every student thrives in their reading journey.
